CONVERGE STRENGTHENS ZERO-WASTE MOVEMENT

Converge ICT Solutions Inc., a leading provider of fiber broadband services, has ramped up its sustainability efforts by launching the third phase of its zero-waste campaign, Countdown to Zero Waste 3.0, targeting proper waste segregation as a critical step toward achieving its goal of zero landfill waste by 2030.

The new initiative categorizes waste into three types: biodegradable, residual, and special waste. This approach aligns with Pasig City’s local regulations, where Converge’s headquarters is located, and emphasizes the reuse, recycling, and recovery of materials.

As part of its strategy, Converge has partnered with Alon and Araw, a Zambales-based nonprofit organization that addresses marine pollution and supports underprivileged children. The group upcycles plastics into reusable products. Converge will donate collected plastic bottles to Alon and Araw and source trash bins made from upcycled materials.

Additionally, Converge collaborates with Humble, a local climate technology firm, to recycle and resell discarded IT equipment, promoting circularity in its operations.

“We are committed to providing essential broadband access for Filipinos while minimizing our environmental footprint. Achieving zero waste to landfill by 2030 is one of our key sustainability targets. Through effective solid waste management, we are working to reduce our operational impact,” said Benjamin Azada, Converge Chief Commercial Officer and Chief Sustainability Officer.

As part of the initiative, Converge plans to install three-bin waste segregation systems in all common areas starting next year. “We aligned this effort with Pasig City’s regulations to ensure compliance while taking steps to care for the environment,” added Jay-Anne Encarnado, Converge VP and Head of Corporate Communications and Public Relations.

Building on Success
Launched in 2022, the Countdown to Zero Waste initiative initially addressed e-waste management, reflecting the Philippines’ standing as the third-largest generator of e-waste in Southeast Asia, producing approximately 540 million kilograms in 2022, according to the Global E-Waste Monitor 2024.

Converge installed e-waste drop boxes in its offices and business centers, enabling employees and customers to safely dispose of electronic waste. By November 2023, the program recovered over 100 kilograms of e-waste, which were processed and recycled through its partners.

The campaign also tackled plastic waste by reducing company-wide plastic consumption and transitioning to eco-friendly packaging for modems in compliance with the Extended Producer Responsibility Law. To date, Converge has repurposed over 1,300 kilograms of plastic waste into eco-cast materials, which have been used in constructing perimeter walls at its facilities.

“E-waste contains both hazardous chemicals and valuable metals that can be recycled. By safely managing this waste, we contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 12 on responsible consumption and production,” Azada explained.

With its ongoing efforts, Converge continues to take significant steps in fostering a sustainable and eco-conscious corporate culture, setting an example for responsible business practices in the Philippines.
