CitySavings joins forces with DepEd, USAID, and RTI International for ABC+ Beginning Reading Program

City Savings Bank (CitySavings), a thrift subsidiary of Aboitiz-led UnionBank, has deepened its commitment to improving early-grade education by supporting the ABC+: Advancing Basic Education in the Philippines project. In partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd), USAID, and RTI International, this initiative aims to boost learning outcomes for young learners in key regions.

Under this program, CitySavings provided 100 Learn Kernel tablets to DepEd Region 6 to support the Beginning Reading Program. This innovative, technology-driven intervention targets Kindergarten to Grade 3 students, helping them develop foundational reading skills through interactive and systematic lessons.

“CitySavings is committed to fostering community growth through education. By collaborating with DepEd, USAID, and RTI International, we amplify the impact of our Corporate Social Responsibility programs to enhance the teaching and learning experience,” said Paula Ruelan, CitySavings’ CSR and Sustainability Head.

The tablets, designed for offline use, offer lessons in the mother tongue aligned with key learning competencies. These include phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge, and guided reading, enriched with music, movement, and games to create a fun and engaging learning environment.

RTI International Chief of Party Ina Aquino emphasized the program’s potential to transform lives: “Access to quality education in a child’s early years can have a critical, lasting impact. ABC+ demonstrates our shared commitment to building a brighter future for Filipino children and laying the groundwork for a stronger economy.”

The Beginning Reading Program addresses literacy challenges by ensuring systematic, accessible instruction. DepEd Region 6 Project Development Officer Ma. Lira Cynthia Quejada lauded the initiative, saying, “This strengthens our efforts to bridge the literacy gap. It’s a testament to how partnerships can create bigger opportunities for learners.”

CitySavings’ involvement in the ABC+ project showcases the power of collaboration in overcoming educational barriers, paving the way for Filipino children to unlock their full potential.
