In today’s digital world, the increasing sophistication of cybercriminals makes internet users more vulnerable than ever. With advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) at their disposal, attackers can now launch more scalable and efficient scams, from phishing schemes to identity theft, putting individuals at greater risk.
However, understanding these threats and taking proactive measures can significantly improve our online security.

At a recent webinar titled Building Resilience Against Online Scams, hosted by leading fiber broadband provider Converge ICT Solutions Inc., technology expert and Chief Executive Advisor Eugene Yeo shared valuable insights on how to defend against these ever-evolving cyber threats.
Understanding the Attackers’ Tactics
Yeo emphasized that the first step in online protection is understanding how attackers operate.
“The first question we need to ask ourselves is: How are we being attacked? We must recognize that there are numerous tools out there targeting not just us, but everyone around us. Even if we install antivirus software or ignore suspicious emails, these measures alone are no longer enough,” Yeo explained.

Tips for Strengthening Your Online Defense
To help individuals build a strong defense against cybercrime, Yeo provided several crucial tips:
1. Be Mindful of What You Share Online
Social media platforms encourage users to share extensive personal information, often without considering the risks involved. Yeo cautioned that cybercriminals can exploit this data for malicious purposes.
He encouraged users to think critically about the personal details they share—whether it’s names, birthdates, contact info, or even family details and real-time locations. These pieces of information can compromise safety without users even realizing it.
“Every bit of information you share online can be used against you. Your birthday, your family, your friends, your location—these are all pieces of the puzzle that attackers can leverage to compromise your security,” Yeo warned.
2. Stay Vigilant
Being constantly aware of potential cyber threats is vital in reducing the risk of falling victim to online attacks. Yeo urged users to stay skeptical of unexpected messages and practice safe browsing habits.
“Be careful with emails that seem legitimate, like those from your bank. Always double-check. Don’t click on links in emails or messages. Go directly to official websites and follow the proper process,” he advised.
3. Think Like an Attacker
Yeo suggested that understanding the mindset of cybercriminals can enhance our online defense. By thinking like an attacker, we can identify weaknesses in our own security and take steps to protect ourselves more effectively.
“By putting ourselves in the shoes of an attacker, we can better understand how to secure our information and minimize potential vulnerabilities,” Yeo said.
4. Engage and Educate Your Circle
Cybercriminals don’t just target individuals; they can also exploit friends and family members. Yeo stressed the importance of educating your loved ones about online safety.
“To add layers of protection, establish a safe code with your family and friends. When they hear that code, they’ll know it’s really you,” Yeo suggested, urging users to create a network of informed individuals who can protect each other.
Empowering Ourselves and Others
Despite the growing threats in the digital landscape, Yeo reminded participants that there are actionable steps we can take to secure our online presence. By adopting these proactive strategies, individuals can take control of their online safety and empower others to do the same.
As technology continues to advance, being vigilant, educated, and proactive will be essential in protecting ourselves and our communities from cyber threats.
