The Department of Health (DOH) Central Luzon Center for Health Development (CLCHD) is calling on the public to support voluntary blood donation in observance of National Blood Donor Month, emphasizing the need for a safe, ethical, and reliable blood supply across the region.
Each year, thousands of patients in Central Luzon require blood transfusions, highlighting the crucial role of regular, voluntary blood donors in saving lives. The DOH’s push aligns with Republic Act 7719 or the National Blood Services Act of 1994, which promotes Voluntary Non-Remunerated Blood Donation (VNRBD) — the act of donating blood without expecting payment, widely recognized as the safest form of donation by the World Health Organization.
Maria Vivian Mallari, Regional Voluntary Blood Services Program Manager and Focal Person for the Central Luzon Regional Blood Center, reported a steady increase in voluntary blood donations over the last five years.
“This shift tells us a powerful story. There are already many people donating, not because they have to, but because they choose to,” Mallari shared.
As of 2024, 91% of the region’s blood supply —over 175,000 blood units —comes from voluntary donations. Despite this growth, Mallari noted that some patients still go without needed transfusions, stressing the need to mobilize more donors and strengthen public awareness.
She urged local governments, NGOs, and private sector groups to promote a culture of voluntary blood donation and combat misinformation surrounding the practice.
“Support the voluntary blood donation program. Be part of the movement. Be the reason someone gets a second chance at life. Magbigay ng dugo. Magbigay ng pag-asa. Sama-sama tayong magligtas ng buhay,” she encouraged.
Mallari also addressed common misconceptions, clarifying that while blood donation is not a cure or detox method, it can promote better health and a sense of purpose among donors.
