GLOBE RESPONDS TO SPOOFING INCIDENT TARGETING POLITICAL FIGURES

Globe Telecom has issued a statement following reports that its sender ID was used to distribute a malicious message targeting the President’s family and prominent political figures. The company clarified that this incident was a case of spoofing, a fraudulent practice where scammers send unauthorized messages using a fake sender ID to deceive recipients.

The spoofing attack involved the use of an IMSI catcher, a portable device that captures mobile signals from users within a specific radius, forcing their devices to downgrade to the 2G network. By exploiting this outdated technology, the fraudsters bypassed Globe’s anti-fraud measures and sent messages outside of the company’s cellular network.

Globe is actively investigating the matter and has partnered with relevant authorities to prevent similar incidents in the future. The company also reminded its customers to be cautious of suspicious text messages and urged them not to engage with any unknown senders.

As a mobile service provider, Globe emphasized that it does not send political messages and maintains no political affiliations. The company reaffirmed its commitment to working with the government on initiatives to promote inclusive connectivity and contribute to the growth of a digitally-enabled Filipino nation.
