PBBM appoints Retired Maj. Gen. Isagani Nerez as new PDEA Chief

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has appointed Retired Major General Isagani Nerez as the new head of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Malacañang confirmed on Tuesday.

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin verified Nerez’s appointment in a text message to Palace reporters. However, Malacañang has yet to release an official copy of Nerez’s appointment paper.

Nerez, a lawyer and a member of the Philippine Military Academy Maharlika Class of 1984, brings decades of law enforcement experience to the role. In 2022, President Marcos appointed Nerez as Undersecretary for Police Affairs in the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Military Affairs.

Throughout his career, Nerez served in various key roles within the Philippine National Police (PNP), including in the Police Anti-Crime Emergency Response, Directorate for Integrated Police Operations in Eastern Mindanao, the PNP Special Action Force, and the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Task Force. He also served in the PNP Anti-Kidnapping Group.

Nerez’s leadership experience includes his tenure as Chief of the Baguio City Police Office and Chief Superintendent of the Cordillera Police Regional Office.

He replaces retired police general Moro Virgilio, who had been appointed as PDEA chief in October 2022.

The PDEA is the lead agency in the government’s campaign against illegal drugs, responsible for the enforcement of laws related to dangerous drugs and their precursors. (PNA | Ruth Abbey Gita-Carlos)
