The Philippine Navy marked its 127th founding anniversary on May 20 with the commissioning of two new naval assets, reinforcing its commitment to national defense and maritime security.
Held at the Naval Operating Base in Subic, the event carried the theme “Philippine Navy: Addressing Challenges, Promoting Regional Stability, and Strengthening Maritime Security.” It showcased the Navy’s continued modernization and strategic role in safeguarding Philippine sovereignty and regional peace.
Philippine Navy Flag Officer-in-Command Vice Admiral Jose Ma. Ambrosio Ezpeleta highlighted the growing importance of naval readiness amid evolving security challenges. “The Navy plays a crucial role not just in defending our sovereignty, but also in protecting marine resources for future generations,” he said.
A key highlight of the celebration was the commissioning of two new vessels—the BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG06), a guided-missile frigate from South Korea, and the BRP Albert Majini (PG909), a fast attack craft locally assembled in the Philippines.

The BRP Miguel Malvar is a 118-meter warship equipped with anti-air, anti-ship, anti-submarine, and electronic warfare systems, capable of long-range, multi-role operations. It is named after the last Filipino general to surrender in the Philippine-American War.
The BRP Albert Majini, the country’s first locally assembled Acero-class Fast Attack Interdiction Craft, boosts the Navy’s rapid response and coastal defense capabilities. It is named in honor of Ensign Albert Majini PN, a Medal of Valor awardee.
Vice Admiral Ezpeleta said these assets support the Navy’s archipelagic defense strategy, which aims to secure the entire Philippine archipelago and its exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, led the commissioning ceremony and reaffirmed the government’s support for a modern, capable Navy that can uphold national and regional maritime security.
