SMART EXPANDS LTE COVERAGE IN SOUTHERN LEYTE, EMPOWERS FARMING COMMUNITIES

PLDT Inc.’s wireless unit, Smart Communications, Inc., has expanded its LTE network in Southern Leyte, enhancing connectivity and technology access for residents, particularly in the town of Saint Bernard. This expansion is set to improve livelihood opportunities, especially for the province’s farming communities.

Southern Leyte’s economy is largely driven by agriculture, with key crops such as coconut and rice. The new LTE sites will enable farmers to access vital information such as real-time weather updates and modern farming techniques.

“Technology is a game-changer for farmers in agriculture-based provinces like Southern Leyte. With reliable connectivity, farmers can access valuable resources, make informed decisions, reduce losses, and boost productivity. This, in turn, improves their quality of life and contributes to the province’s economic growth,” said Debbie M. Hu, FVP and Wireless Network Head at Smart.

Danny Balasico, president of the Tambis St. Bernard Farmers Irrigators Association, expressed his gratitude for the network expansion. “As communication becomes essential in today’s digital world, this expansion will support our efforts to integrate technology into our farming operations,” he said.

To further empower farmers, PLDT and Smart continue to roll out their FarmTech packages across the country. These kits, designed to assist local farmers with digital literacy, include a tablet, 10 smartphones, SmartBro pocket Wi-Fi, learning resources, and more. Tambis St. Bernard Farmers Irrigators Association is the first group from Southern Leyte to receive the FarmTech package.

“We are grateful to PLDT, Smart, and the Department of Agriculture – Agricultural Training Institute Region 8 for selecting us as a beneficiary. With these tools and enhanced connectivity, we are excited to train our farmer-members on using mobile devices and applications to improve our farming practices,” said Balasico.

Smart’s continued network investments and innovative services aim to support Filipino farmers and fisherfolk, aligning with PLDT Group’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in the areas of poverty alleviation, decent work and economic growth, and innovation in infrastructure.
