SN ABOITIZ POWER EXPANDS SUPPORT FOR ITOGON’S INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES

SN Aboitiz Power-Benguet, Inc. (SNAP-Benguet) has further strengthened its partnership with the indigenous peoples (IP) communities of Itogon, Benguet, by turning over additional benefits to the Tinongdan Indigenous Peoples Organization (TINPO) on December 18, 2024, and the Itogon Indigenous Peoples Organization (IIPO) on December 23, 2024.

The benefits were distributed based on a 60-40 split agreement between the two IP organizations. TINPO received 60% of the allocation, amounting to PhP3,808,530.00, while IIPO received 40%, totaling PhP2,539,020.00.

As part of its ongoing corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts, SNAP-Benguet had earlier provided PhP5 million for special CSR projects in the first three years, with TINPO receiving the funds in line with agreements made between the IPOs. Starting in subsequent years, PhP1 million will be awarded annually to barangays selected by both organizations.

The additional benefits stem from direct negotiations between SNAP-Benguet and the indigenous organizations, aimed at supporting the implementation of development and capacity-building programs within their Ancestral Domain. The funds will also contribute to preserving the cultural heritage of the communities and supporting initiatives that promote their welfare. This commitment is part of SNAP-Benguet’s long-standing partnership with the indigenous communities that host the 140-MW Binga hydroelectric power plant. Starting in 2024, SNAP-Benguet has pledged approximately PhP10.3 million in benefits to the Itogon ancestral domain annually.

“On behalf of the COELs [Council of Elders], we want to express our gratitude to SNAP for the support,” said TINPO Chieftain Norberto Pacio. “We now have the benefits that we have been waiting for.”

IIPO Chair Rosita Bargaso also expressed her appreciation, stating, “Salamat sa SNAP at sana ay magtagal pa ang magandang samahan nating dalawa. (We thank SNAP and hope our partnership lasts even longer.)”

SNAP-Benguet took ownership and began operations of the Binga hydroelectric facility in 2008 following a successful privatization bid. In response, the company engaged in consultations with the IP communities, resulting in an agreement to provide benefits through a CSR program. To date, SNAP has contributed PhP37.2 million in benefits to TINPO, demonstrating its commitment to fostering sustainable development, empowering host communities, and advancing renewable energy in the region.
