Tropical Storm ‘Marce’ enters PAR, likely to intensify

Tropical Storm ‘Marce’ (international name Yinxing), entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) around 4am Monday, as reported by PAGASA.

Marce, the 13th tropical cyclone to enter PAR this year, is carrying maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near its center and gusts reaching up to 80 kph. As of 4 a.m., it was located 935 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas.

While no Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) is raised yet, PAGASA noted that TCWS No. 1 could be issued over parts of Cagayan by Tuesday. Marce, moving northwest, may also enhance the northeasterly wind flow this week.

The northeasterly winds are expected to bring gale-force gusts to Batanes, Cagayan (including Babuyan Islands), Isabela, Ilocos Norte, Aurora, and the northern portion of Quezon on Monday. Rough seas are also expected along the seaboards of Batanes and Ilocos Norte, prompting small vessels and motor bancas to avoid going out to sea.

By Tuesday, the cyclone’s trough may bring rain to extreme Northern Luzon and eastern Luzon.

PAGASA said Marce’s path remains uncertain. The storm may either move westward toward extreme Northern Luzon or mainland Luzon, or remain over the Philippine Sea east of Northern Luzon.

“A westward shift is possible within 24 hours due to a high-pressure area north of Marce, which may alter the landfall scenario from Babuyan Islands down to Isabela,” PAGASA said.

The storm is forecast to intensify and could reach typhoon category by Wednesday.
