Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the new pope, taking the papal name Leo XIV. He becomes the 267th Roman Pontiff, following a conclave of 133 cardinal electors.
The announcement was made from the Loggia of Blessings at St. Peter’s Basilica by Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti, who proclaimed the traditional Latin phrase: “Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum, habemus Papam” – “I announce to you a great joy: We have a Pope.”
The election was confirmed after white smoke rose from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signaling a successful vote on the fourth ballot. This followed earlier rounds that resulted in black smoke on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.
