The Senate convened a hearing to deliberate proposed measures aimed at strengthening the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA), focusing on maximizing former military lands to support national security while driving inclusive socioeconomic growth.

The hearing was led by the Committee on Government Corporations and Public Enterprises, in coordination with the committees on National Defense and Security, Peace, Unification and Reconciliation, and Finance, chaired by Senator Mark A. Villar.

During the discussion, Villar emphasized the role of countryside development in decongesting Metro Manila and generating employment opportunities in the regions.

He noted that strengthening the BCDA charter would accelerate development in former military bases, which in turn could create more job opportunities for Filipinos.

The hearing also highlighted the importance of developing housing near economic hubs to reduce long commuting times for workers. Lawmakers likewise underscored the need to ensure that land development initiatives continue to support the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Modernization Program, as required by law.

Senators Loren B. Legarda and Erwin T. Tulfo were also present during the hearing, reaffirming the Senate’s commitment to aligning development efforts with national interest.
