Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) began the construction of a Multi-Species Marine Hatchery at barangay Quinawan in Bagac, Bataan.

The P30-million project was funded through Republic Act 11912 authored by former Bataan 2nd District Representative and now Governor Jose Enrique Garcia III.

BFAR Regional Director Wilfredo Cruz said the structure will benefit not only fishermen in Bataan but also neighboring provinces in Central Luzon as well.

“It aims to alleviate the challenge of sourcing fish seeds. We expect the hatchery to play a crucial role in stabilizing aquaculture, potentially reducing the need for fish imports from other countries,” he emphasized.

Prior to the groundbreaking ceremony, BFAR conducted various assessment activities including a full-scale feasibility study to ensure its efficacy and sustainability.

Cruz also expressed optimism as the facility is a significant milestone towards promoting sustainable fisheries in the region.

“This project aligns with our commitment to actively support local fishermen and enhance the aquaculture industry,” he added.

For his part, Governor Garcia stressed the economic and environmental benefits of the project.

“This hatchery is a testament to our dedication to the well-being of our communities and the preservation of our marine resources,” he underscored.

Sharemax Holdings donated the site, highlighting the collaborative spirit between the public and private sectors in advancing sustainable fisheries initiatives.

After the construction phase, BFAR will actively operate the hatchery for the first two years in collaboration with the Provincial and Municipal Agriculture Offices.

Following this period, the provincial government will take over the facility management and operations through a Memorandum of Agreement.

Once operational, the hatchery will play a pivotal role in activities like fish seed production, and broodstock maintenance.
