As part of its ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, Globe has joined an exclusive group of telecom companies in participating in the Green Network Index (GNI) study, an initiative led by GSMA Intelligence (GSMAi) that establishes new benchmarks for network sustainability in the telecommunications industry.
Globe is one of just six telecom companies worldwide involved in this groundbreaking project, reflecting its dedication to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and driving greener network solutions across the industry.

“We understand that collaboration is essential for shaping a sustainable telecom sector. Our participation in the GNI study demonstrates our commitment to integrating environmentally responsible practices into our operations while working toward achieving Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.
Apple Evangelista, Globe’s Head of Sustainability and Social Responsibility, also shared, “The insights from the GNI are invaluable in refining our approach to energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption, and enhancing network sustainability.”
The telecom industry’s global shift towards sustainability is accelerating. A majority of operators, representing 70% of the sector’s revenue, have already aligned their goals with the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Rising energy costs, which account for 15-20% of a telco’s operational expenses, have spurred the push for more efficient energy practices. In addition, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reporting is becoming increasingly important to credit rating agencies and financial analysts, necessitating the development of a standardized metric for measuring sustainability.
To address these needs, GSMAi created the GNI, a comprehensive tool that combines various factors into a single metric to improve comparability across telecom operators and guide their green transformation.
“Tracking the progress of mobile network operators on energy sustainability is crucial for driving meaningful industry change. Our Green Network Index provides operators with a valuable tool to make informed decisions that support a sustainable future,” said Tim Hatt, Head of Research at GSMA Intelligence.
The GNI expands on GSMAi’s previous energy efficiency analysis by including factors such as energy and carbon efficiency, renewable energy usage, network performance, and availability, along with its impact on vertical industries.
By participating in this study, Globe continues to drive positive change in the telecom sector, reinforcing its role as a leader in green network innovation.
The results of the first round of the GNI study are available for download on GSMAi’s website after registration for a free public account. Access the report here: GSMAi Green Networks Index.
