LPA strengthens into Tropical Depression #Mirasol’; Signal No. 1 up in parts of North Luzon

The low-pressure area (LPA) east of Quezon has intensified into a tropical depression (TD) and was named Mirasol, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported Tuesday afternoon.

As of 4 p.m., Mirasol was spotted 210 kilometers east northeast of Infanta, Quezon, packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph.

Signal No. 1 is raised over the following areas:

  • Batanes, Cagayan (including Babuyan Islands), Isabela, Quirino
  • Northeastern Nueva Vizcaya (Diadi, Quezon, Kasibu, Dupax del Norte, Bambang, Ambaguio, Bayombong, Solano, Villaverde, Bagabag)
  • Northern and central Aurora (Dilasag, Casiguran, Dinalungan, Dipaculao, Baler)
  • Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Ilocos Norte
  • Polillo Islands, Catanduanes
  • Northern Camarines Norte (Vinzons, Capalonga, Jose Panganiban, Paracale, Talisay, Daet, Mercedes)
  • Northeastern Camarines Sur (Caramoan, Garchitorena, Presentacion, Lagonoy, Siruma, Tinambac, Goa, San Jose)

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon will bring strong to gale-force gusts across the southern portion of Quezon, the rest of Camarines Norte, Marinduque, Romblon, the southern parts of Mindoro provinces, and Panay Island.

PAGASA also warned of moderate seas over the seaboards of Cagayan, Babuyan Islands, Batanes, eastern Isabela and Aurora, and the northern seaboard of Ilocos Norte. Small vessels and motorboats are advised to take precautions.

Mirasol is expected to make landfall over Isabela or northern Aurora on Wednesday before exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Thursday, PAGASA said.
