NGCP sets contingency measures for upcoming midterm elections

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has suspended all non-critical maintenance and construction activities beginning May 5, 2025, as part of its contingency measures to ensure stable power transmission during the May 12 national and local elections.

In line with the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) resolutions outlining prohibited acts and inter-agency roles, NGCP’s temporary suspension of work will remain in effect until May 16. This includes halting all maintenance within substations and within a 300-meter radius of energized transmission lines.

Vegetation and obstruction clearing was completed across all transmission corridors as of April 30—except for one South Luzon line, where scheduled trimming is still pending due to unresolved land access with a private owner.

These proactive measures align with COMELEC Resolutions No. 10999 and 11055, which set key election-related dates and responsibilities of national agencies to ensure peaceful and credible elections. Local absentee voting began on April 28, while canvassing and proclamation of winners will take place from May 13 to 19.

“NGCP is strictly implementing its contingency protocols and working closely with all concerned groups to safeguard the reliable transmission of electricity, especially during the critical election period,” the company said in a statement.

Based on current forecasts, the country’s power supply is expected to remain sufficient throughout the election period. Power plant maintenance schedules were also adjusted to ensure their availability.

NGCP will activate round-the-clock operations of its Overall Command Center from May 11 to 8:00 PM on May 14, with key personnel—line crews, engineers, pilots, and technical teams—strategically deployed to quickly respond to any line trippings or emergencies. System Operations and Operations & Maintenance units will remain fully manned, while support teams will be on duty to provide assistance.

Since February, NGCP’s Power Task Force Elections (PTFE) has been preparing for this critical period, reinforcing the grid’s security and readiness to support a smooth electoral process nationwide.
