President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Monday led the groundbreaking ceremony for the new passenger terminal building at Caticlan Airport, a key infrastructure project expected to boost economic growth and improve travel experience to and from Boracay.

The terminal, to be completed within 24 months by Megawide Construction Corporation, is part of the government’s broader push to modernize transport infrastructure under public-private partnerships.

“The influx of travelers will give a strong boost to both the local and national economy. Tourism already accounts for nearly 8% of our GDP, and we aim to grow that further,” President Marcos said.

Department of Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon also highlighted the importance of PPPs in accelerating infrastructure development, citing San Miguel Corporation’s commitment to finish the terminal by 2027.

Caticlan Airport is currently the country’s fourth busiest, accommodating over 3 million passengers in 2024. Once completed, the new terminal is expected to support up to 7 million passengers annually.

The terminal will feature modern amenities such as expanded check-in areas, enhanced security screening, upgraded baggage handling, and more efficient boarding gates aimed at reducing waiting time and improving overall passenger comfort.

“This project strengthens Boracay’s position as a world-class destination while promoting ease and convenience in travel,” Dizon said.
