The Philippines is exploring the possibility of becoming the first Southeast Asian nation to host the prestigious World Games in 2033.

Officials of the International World Games Association (IWGA), led by president Josรฉ Perurena Lรณpez, met with Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Patrick Gregorio and Team Philippines chef de mission Stephen Arapoc on Saturday at the Intercontinental Century City Hotel in Chengdu, China, to discuss the potential bid.

โ€œThe World Games is all about bringing together athletes and communities. You donโ€™t need new facilitiesโ€”we donโ€™t give it to big cities. We want a host that will unite its people and create an unforgettable tournament,โ€ Lรณpez said.

Also present were IWGA CEO Joachim Gossow, deputy CEO Guillaume Felli, and vice president Tom Dielen.

Gregorio expressed confidence in the countryโ€™s capability to stage the event, which features non-Olympic sports. โ€œWhat we can offer is a game with a heartbeat. Imagine welcoming 110 countries with the warmth of Filipino hospitality,โ€ he said, noting existing facilities in Manila, Clark, and Baguio that could accommodate athletes, officials, and guests.

Bidding for the 2033 Games is open until 2026, with the host to be announced the same year. The 2029 edition will be held in Karlsruhe, Germany, featuring 5,000 athletes in 34 sports, including possible indigenous games from the host nation.
