The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) is exploring a potential partnership with the Port of San Diego to transform Subic Freeport into a smart port city. During a visit on February 6, SBMA Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose L. Aliño, alongside Port of San Diego officials, discussed areas of collaboration to enhance both ports’ operations and innovation.
SBMA Senior Deputy Administrator for Port Operations, Ronnie Yambao, shared that the partnership could focus on advanced technologies and processes, including Artificial Intelligence, Automation, Break Bulk Cargo Handling, Shore Power Connection, Cruise Ship Terminal Development, Market Development, and Ship Repair.

“The Port of San Diego extended an invitation for Chairman Aliño to visit their port and explore additional opportunities. Both ports have been sister ports since 2018, and we see tremendous potential in working together,” Yambao said.
Port of San Diego Commissioner Gil Anthony Ungab expressed enthusiasm about strengthening trade relations between the two ports, noting, “We see great potential in developing commerce between Subic Bay and San Diego, and we are eager to explore further opportunities that will benefit both regions.”
Joel Valenzuela, Director for Maritime at the Port of San Diego, highlighted the similarities between the two ports, emphasizing the opportunity to deepen their collaboration in maritime industries and related sectors.
Chairman Aliño welcomed the partnership, emphasizing the mutual benefits that will arise from the proposed collaboration. He noted that this move aligns with SBMA’s vision of making Subic Bay a modern port city, enhancing its capacity for maritime development, automation, AI, and trade initiatives.
“The proposed partnership with the Port of San Diego is a vital step in advancing Subic Bay Freeport’s maritime, cruise terminal, and trade development goals,” said Aliño.
The Port of San Diego is one of the top 30 U.S. containership ports, handling nearly 3 million metric tons of cargo annually through its terminals.
SBMA also has a long-standing partnership with the Virginia Port Authority, established in 2015, focused on enhancing trade and best practices in break bulk and cruise ship logistics management.
SDA Yambao concluded, “This partnership is a positive step towards expanding the Port of Subic Bay’s global reach and trade network, particularly with the U.S.”
