The Universal Robina Corporation (URC) Bais Distillery said multi-sectoral efforts are underway to contain a wastewater spill caused by the collapse of its lagoon wall following recent earthquakes and continuous heavy rainfall.

In an official statement issued on October 28, 2025, the distillery said it is working closely with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), local government units, and environmental officials for “immediate containment, proper cleanup, and full compliance with environmental standards.”

“While the company has been vigilant and diligent about the integrity of its lagoon, the unusually heavy and relentless rains and the series of earthquakes led to this unfortunate incident,” the statement read. “We are committed to building climate-resilient and robust lagoon walls, taking into full account the changing environment and the need to keep our surrounding communities safe.”

The incident occurred after the 20-hectare tailing pond of the distillery collapsed over the weekend, spilling molasses wastewater into the Tañon Strait—a protected marine area that serves as a vital corridor for migratory whales and dolphins.

The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Negros Island Region (NIR) earlier issued an interim cease and desist order against the Gokongwei-owned distillery following the breach, which contaminated parts of Bais Bay and the nearby Manjuyod White Sandbar.

Authorities said the cracks in the tailing pond were worsened by hours of torrential rain from October 25 to 26, which, combined with earthquake damage, led to the failure of the lagoon wall.

DENR-NIR Regional Director Charlie Fabre said the company must fast-track repairs to prevent further contamination, while the Philippine Coast Guard continues containment operations in the affected area.

According to the EMB, molasses is not inherently toxic but can deplete oxygen levels in the water when present in large quantities, endangering marine life.

Tourism activities in the Manjuyod sandbar have been temporarily suspended as part of precautionary measures.

URC Bais Distillery assured nearby communities that it is coordinating with local authorities to extend assistance and mitigate the impact of the spill.
