The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has produced 273 metric tons of Bagong Bayaning Magsasaka (BBM) rice through its contract farming program in Central Luzon. This contributes to the nationwide target of cultivating rice across 40,000 hectares, with Central Luzon accounting for 1,700 hectares.
NIA Regional Manager Josephine Salazar shared during the 22nd episode of Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas that approximately 1,300 hectares have been harvested, with 400 hectares set for harvest soon. Salazar noted plans for an early harvest to avoid disruptions from Tropical Storm Kristine.
The harvested 273 metric tons of rice equates to 23,000 bags of 10-kilo BBM rice, available exclusively through Kadiwa ng Pangulo caravans. Over 10,000 bags have already been distributed, with another 10,000 bags ready for release.
NIA’s contract farming initiative offers participating farmers P50,000 in initial support, including P30,000 for seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides, and P20,000 for labor costs. After harvest, NIA buys the rice and compensates farmers with an additional P50,000 for delivering five metric tons, while any excess production stays with the farmers.
Salazar emphasized that BBM rice is freshly harvested, milled, and quickly distributed to Kadiwa stores, ensuring affordable rice at P29 per kilo. This program supports both farmers and vulnerable groups like senior citizens, persons with disabilities, solo parents, and Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program beneficiaries.
