PBBM: Navotas landfill fully extinguished

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced that the fire at the Navotas Sanitary Landfill has been fully extinguished following weeks of coordinated government and private sector response efforts.

In a social media post on Sunday night, Marcos confirmed, “Tuluyan nang naapula ang sunog sa Navotas landfill.”

The containment of the fire was made possible through the joint efforts of firefighters, local government units, environmental teams, the Department of Public Works and Highways, the Department of Tourism, and private partners including San Miguel Corporation, Prime Infrastructure, and SM Prime.

The President also acknowledged the support and technical assistance provided by the Japanese government.

While the fire has been fully put out, Marcos directed concerned agencies to maintain round-the-clock monitoring of the area, including air and water quality checks, thermal scanning for possible remaining hotspots, and health monitoring for affected residents and responders.

Authorities said the fire, which originated from methane gas buildup in decomposing waste, had earlier affected air quality in nearby cities including Navotas, Valenzuela, Malabon, Caloocan, Quezon City, Mandaluyong, Makati, and Manila.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources and other agencies have since conducted inspections and are working on long-term measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
