Pampanga First District Congressman Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr. has pledged to donate P100,000 from his personal salary to assist victims of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck General Santos City and nearby areas in southern Mindanao on June 8.
In a statement, Lazatin expressed solidarity with residents of General Santos City, Sarangani, and neighboring communities affected by the powerful quake.
“My heart goes out to our fellow Filipinos in General Santos City, Sarangani, and neighboring communities affected by the powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake,” Lazatin said.
The lawmaker also offered prayers for the safety of affected residents and the recovery of communities impacted by the disaster. He likewise commended rescuers, medical personnel, volunteers, and other frontliners for their efforts in responding to the emergency.
Based on reports from the Office of Civil Defense, at least 15 people have died while 129 others were injured following the earthquake.
The tremor, which struck off the coast of General Santos City, caused significant damage to several structures and prompted tsunami warnings in parts of the region.
Authorities continue to advise residents to avoid entering damaged buildings and homes as assessments and response operations are ongoing.
Lazatin also urged the public to remain vigilant, follow official advisories, and continue supporting affected communities as authorities monitor possible aftershocks.
