Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), owner and operator of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), said it is stepping up efforts to address recurring flooding and support motorists affected by days of southwest monsoon rains.
MPTC said it is coordinating closely with the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Toll Regulatory Board (TRB), and other government agencies to identify immediate measures for motorists while accelerating flood-prevention initiatives along the affected NLEX corridor.
As part of a long-term solution to recurring flooding in the San Simon segment, MPTC said it plans to raise the northbound and southbound pavements in Tulaoc, San Simon, once the elevation of the Tulaoc Bridge is completed.
Pampanga Gov. Lilia Pineda earlier said the flooding is linked to a broader drainage problem in the province, noting that downstream areas such as Macabebe and Masantol are already saturated, limiting the discharge of floodwaters toward Manila Bay.
MPTC also cited Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon’s assessment that the sheer volume of water brought by the southwest monsoon overwhelmed existing drainage systems. Dizon noted that pumping alone would not provide a lasting solution because floodwaters could simply flow back into the affected areas.
