Rizal Memorial gets world-class makeover

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), City Government of Manila, and SM Prime Holdings have signed an agreement to redevelop the iconic Rizal Memorial Sports Complex (RMSC) into a world-class sports, culture, and lifestyle district.

PSC Chairman John Patrick “Pato” Gregorio, Commissioners Olivia “Bong” Coo, Walter Francis Torres and Matthew “Fritz” Gaston, Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso, and SM Prime President Jeffrey C. Lim formalized the partnership aimed at modernizing the historic sports complex while preserving its heritage.

The redevelopment will include:

  • PSC Plaza — a new walkable public pathway along part of Adriatico Street.
  • Elevated Walkway — a connection between the RMSC and the redeveloped SM Harrison Plaza.
  • Heritage and modernization — upgraded facilities while retaining the complex’s historical and sporting significance.

The project is being supported by SM Prime Chairman Hans T. Sy and SM Supermalls President Steven Tan and is envisioned to position Manila as a major sports tourism destination.

Gregorio described the agreement as a defining moment for Philippine sports and heritage, saying the transformation would allow the RMSC to continue serving Filipino athletes and the public for generations.

The redevelopment is also expected to prepare the historic complex for the 2027 Southeast Asian Plus Youth Games, providing Filipino athletes with a more modern and internationally competitive sporting venue.
