DPWH BEGINS PHP28.9-M REPAIR OF BILIRAN BRIDGE

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has commenced the PHP28.9-million repair of Biliran Bridge, following public concern over its wavelike movements that went viral online.

According to the DPWH Biliran District Engineering Office, construction began this week after the issuance of the notice to proceed earlier this month.

“The contractor has started mobilizing equipment and materials, including scaffoldings, for preparatory repair activities,” said DPWH Biliran Officer-in-Charge Irwin Antonio in a statement on Thursday.

The repair project includes the replacement of corroded bolts, steel members, and plates, installation of new finger-type expansion joints, and restoration of other damaged bridge components.

While repairs are underway, the bridge remains open to light vehicles (weighing five tons or below), while heavier trucks are being transported via a barge provided by the provincial government.

Constructed in 1976, Biliran Bridge serves as the sole land connection between Biliran and mainland Leyte. Since December 23, 2024, only light vehicles, including passenger vans and SUVs, have been allowed to cross the bridge after a viral video exposed its structural issues.
