The Department of Trade and Industry Region Office III (DTI-3) capped off the celebration of the 2022 Consumer Welfare Month with a culminating activity last November 10, 2022 at the Waltermart Mall, City of San Fernando, Pampanga. This year’s celebration is anchored on the theme: “Sustainable Consumerism in the Digital Age”.
During the culminating program, DTI-3 Assistant Regional Director Brigida T. Pili stated that October of every year is declared as Consumer Welfare Month through Proclamation No. 1098 of 1997 by former President Fidel V. Ramos. “The celebration aims to foster better dialogue and collaboration between consumers, businessmen, government, the academe, and other stakeholders to strengthen the agency’s mandate on consumer advocacy”, she added.
Part of the program was the awarding of DTI Certified Establishments or Bagwis Awards to recognize establishments faithfully adhering to consumer laws and supporting consumer rights. A total of 74 Bagwis awards were given to certified establishments coming from the seven provinces of the region. The award gives due recognition to establishments upholding the rights of consumers while practicing responsible business where consumers get the best value for money.
Another highlight of the event was the spoken poetry contest for high school students in the region. Seven students from the different provinces delivered their pieces which centered on the theme of the program. Alessandra Nicole Maniego of Tarlac Montessori School bested six other participants in the live event with her piece entitled, “Buy, buy, buy”. She was followed by Joyce Triñanes of Ramada National High School (Aurora) in second place, and Drieynne Louizse Sevilla of Camachiles National High School (Pampanaga) in third place. Other participants were Sophia Valdesotto of Salapungan National High School (Bulacan), Dorcas Beatha Valencia of University of Nueva Caceres (Bataan), Denise Abelle Basa of Tapinac Senior High School (Zambales), and Ryan Laurence Espino of the College of the Immaculate Conception (Nueva Ecija)
For the Quiz Bee contest which ensued last October 21, Claire Iya C. Esguerra of Aurora National Science High School won the first place. Dimples J. Villanueva of Maronquillo National High School came in second while Girlie G. Tumang of Lawy National High School placed third.
Patricia Therese P. Damaso of San Guillermo National High School (Zambales) won first place in the e-poster making contest. She was followed in second by Angel B. Florentino of Dona Candelaria Memeses Duque National High School while Joendam Kem C. Trucilla of Aurora National High School bagged the third place.
As to the vlogging contest, Yhana Trinidad of Aurora National High School bagged the first place for the students’ category with her piece centered on the characteristics of a responsible buyer. The first place for the consumer organizations category was bagged by Carranglan Consumer Affairs Council with their winning vlog on sustainable consumerism.
