First bricks, now cement: Angeles City’s ‘Walang Plastikan’ project levels up – The Voice Newsweekly

The Walang Plastikan: Plastik Palit Bigas program of the Angeles City government has leveled up anew. After brick pavers, cement will be the next product that will be produced from the plastics collected through the program.

During the meeting of Angeles City Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin, Jr. with Republic Cement and Building Materials Inc. Managing Director Atty. Angela Edralin-Valencia held recently, it was determined that collected polyethylene plastics, polystyrene packaging material, and other non-recyclable combustibles will be used to manufacture cement.

According to the mayor, “Yung pong mga plastik na nakokolekta ng ating proyekto, gagawin po nating semento, bukod po sa nasimulan nating paggawa sa mga ito bilang brick pavers,” Lazatin said.

This was echoed by Edralin-Valencia, who said that “Yung mga polyethylene plastics can serve as an alternative fuel to manufacture cement.”

Mayor Lazatin announced that the city government will soon launch the waste-to-cement program, where  every one metric ton of shredded waste will be converted to 10 bags of cement, while five bags of cement is equivalent to one metric ton of unshredded waste.

All of the cement produced from the project, as well as the brick pavers will be solely used in the administration’s projects and minor repairs in public schools.

City Engineer Donato Dizon  was tasked by Mayor Lazatin to supervise the project with Chief Adviser IC Calaguas.

“Ang bilin po ni Mayor, use it for the local infrastructure projects, particularly in the sidewalks and drainages,” Engr. Dizon said.

At the time of writing, 1,465,546 kilos of plastic have already been collected and exchanged for rice thru the Walang Plastikan: Plastik Palit Bigas project since its launch on January 2022.

Redemption trucks are plying via schedule in the 33 barangays, while the redemption booth in the City Hall is open every Mondays to Thursdays, 8AM to 5PM.

The redemption booth launched in July 2022 is being supervised by Engr. Dizon, Calaguas, Executive Assistant IV Reina Manuel and Angeles City Economic Development Investment Promotions Office Head Irish Bonus-Llego.
