Gawad Kalinga founder arrested for qualified trafficking

Authorities arrested Antonio Meloto, founder of Gawad Kalinga, in Angat, Bulacan on Friday in connection with two counts of qualified trafficking.

According to the Bulacan Police Provincial Office, the 76-year-old Meloto was apprehended during an intelligence-driven operation at a farm in Barangay Encanto, Angat, by personnel from the provincial intelligence unit, the 1st Provincial Mobile Force Company, and the Angat Municipal Police Station.

The arrest was carried out based on warrants issued by the Regional Trial Court in Malolos City for two counts of qualified trafficking under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act. The court recommended no bail for both charges.

In September 2025, the Department of Justice recommended the filing of two counts of qualified sex trafficking against Meloto, citing an alleged pattern of abuse of authority and exploitation.

Police Regional Office 3 Director Brig. Gen. Jess B. Mendez commended the operating units for the successful arrest, emphasizing the role of intelligence-led operations in ensuring that individuals facing criminal charges are brought before the law.

The case is now set to proceed through the judicial process. (Philippine News Agency)
