Governor’s Cup 2026 opens

The Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament 2026 officially opened on June 10 at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center, bringing together 19 cities and municipalities from across Pampanga for one of the province’s biggest basketball competitions.

The tournament aims to showcase the talents of young Kapampangan athletes while promoting sports as a positive avenue for personal growth and development.

Present during the opening ceremony were Governor Lilia “Nanay” Pineda, Vice Governor Dennis “Delta” Pineda, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, local chief executives, municipal and city officials, and representatives from the Pampanga Sangguniang Kabataan Federation.

Vice Governor Pineda emphasized that the tournament serves as a platform to discover promising basketball players and help them pursue opportunities in higher education through athletic scholarships and varsity programs.

Provincial officials also expressed gratitude to NLEX Corporation and businessman Manny Pangilinan for providing a ₱1-million sponsorship for the tournament.

As additional support, Governor Pineda announced that each participating team would receive ₱100,000 to assist with their campaign in the competition.

The opening festivities featured a parade of teams and a muse competition participated in by representatives from the competing local government units.

Sta. Rita was named Best Muse, while Mexico finished second and the City of San Fernando placed third.

The Governor’s Cup is expected to feature weeks of competition as teams vie for the championship and the opportunity to represent the best of Pampanga basketball.
