The UP Aguman is a socio-civic and service-oriented organization that stands out for its rich history, resilience and an unwavering commitment to serving the Kapampangan community.
The roots of UP Aguman trace back to the 1930s when Kapampangan-speaking students at UP Diliman attempted to form an association. However, it wasn’t until 1971 that a renewed effort led by Kapampangan members of Lakas Wika gave birth to UP Aguman.
Led by Eduardo Cunan, the organization faced challenges during the turbulent 1970s, preventing its initial recognition due to student unrest and government scrutiny. Undeterred by setbacks, the original batch of UP Aguman members spearheaded a revival in 1973. Drafting a constitution and outlining their aims, they overcame the stringent recognition criteria and achieved it on December 12, 1973, marking a turning point that allowed UP Aguman to fulfill its mission of promoting Kapampangan culture and providing support to its members.
Over the years, UP Aguman has achieved significant milestones. The annual academic competition โPautakanโ has become a staple event, attracting schools from across Pampanga. The organization’s venture into the arts with Sining, launched in the mid-1980s, that has evolved into a showcase of Kapampangan youth talent in literary, visual and performing arts. The College Entrance Exam Review (CEER) further demonstrates UP Aguman’s commitment to aiding Kapampangan high school seniors in their pursuit of higher education.
Beyond the university campus, UP Aguman has played a crucial role in serving the Kapampangan people for five decades. From academic and cultural activities to service-oriented initiatives, the organization strives to meet the needs and interests of the Kapampangan community, especially the youth.
