President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. witnessed the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) among Ayala Corporation, Globe Telecom, Mitsubishi Corporation, and KDDI Corporation for the development of the Philippines’ first Intelligent City, with the Makati Central Business District identified as the pilot area.
The agreement was signed on May 28 in Tokyo, Japan, marking a major step toward transforming urban living through the use of advanced digital technologies, data-driven systems, artificial intelligence (AI), and enhanced connectivity.
Under the partnership, the four companies will collaborate to create an intelligent urban ecosystem that will improve mobility, retail, energy management, and connectivity while integrating smart city platforms powered by data and AI solutions.
Ayala Corporation President and CEO Cezar Consing said the initiative aims to reimagine Makati as a center of innovation where technology and community development work together to improve the quality of life of residents and businesses.
Globe Telecom President and CEO Carl Cruz emphasized the importance of reliable connectivity in driving digital inclusion and economic growth, describing connectivity as a critical utility that enables communities and industries to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
The project will also utilize Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and AI-powered applications to support more sustainable, resilient, and efficient urban communities.
Officials said the Intelligent City initiative is expected to serve as a model for future smart city developments across the country, helping create safer, more connected, and innovation-driven communities while boosting economic competitiveness and opportunities for Filipino enterprises.
The signing was witnessed by President Marcos, Department of Trade and Industry Secretary Cristina Roque, and key executives from the participating companies, underscoring the significance of the partnership in advancing the country’s digital transformation agenda.
