The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) has perpetually banned former Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin from all league competitions and activities following the tragic drowning incident at a training camp in Dipaculao, Aurora, that claimed the lives of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.

The sanction bars Baldwin from serving in any coaching, administrative, advisory or official capacity and from entering UAAP venues. The decision is final and non-appealable.

Meanwhile, Ateneo team manager Epok Quimpo, assistant coaches and physical therapist John Rueca were placed under indefinite suspension pending further determination by the UAAP Board.

Despite the sanctions, the UAAP cleared Ateneo’s men’s basketball team to compete in Season 89, recognizing the student-athletes as victims of the tragedy and their desire to honor their fallen teammates through competition.

The league, however, required Ateneo to undertake a comprehensive review of its basketball team’s organizational structure and management to strengthen student-athlete protection, welfare, accountability and institutional oversight.

Louie Alas will serve as interim head coach, with former Blue Eagle Nico Salva as interim team manager.

Ateneo’s participation keeps the UAAP an eight-school league for Season 89, which opens on September 12.
