In a significant environmental achievement, the City of Balanga in Bataan has become the first city in the Philippines to receive Wetland City Accreditation from the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
This prestigious recognition places Balanga among 31 cities globally that have demonstrated a commitment to wetland conservation and sustainable urban development.
City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Head, Nerissa Mateo, emphasized Balanga’s ongoing efforts in wetland conservation, notably through its Wetland and Nature Park. The park, a sanctuary for thousands of migratory birds, serves as both a protected environment and a natural outdoor museum showcasing a diverse bio-network.

“The Ramsar Standing Committee officially announced Balanga’s accreditation during its 64th meeting. This recognition is a testament to our city’s dedication to environmental protection and wetland preservation,” said Mateo.
She also noted that this achievement proves that development and environmental conservation can coexist.
“This honor not only brings global recognition to Balanga but also sets an example for other Philippine cities to adopt similar practices in managing urban wetlands. It also motivates our residents to continue protecting our environment while advancing progress,” she added.
The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, also known as the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, is an international treaty that promotes the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands worldwide, recognizing their ecological, economic, and cultural value.
Balanga’s accreditation sets a national precedent, highlighting the critical role wetlands play in urban areas and inspiring other cities to find a harmonious balance between nature and development. (PIA Region 3-Bataan)
