Mobile leader Globe has commended the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) for successfully apprehending two individuals involved in the illegal sale of pre-registered SIM cards, violating the SIM Registration Act.
In a recent buy-bust operation, the PNP-CIDG’s Detective Special Operations Unit arrested two Chinese nationals who were attempting to sell pre-registered SIM cards. The authorities confiscated a total of 4,000 SIM cards, including 1,700 Globe SIM cards and 2,300 TM SIM cards, allegedly intended for use in criminal activities such as online phishing, romance scams, and mobile fraud.
Under the SIM Registration Act, the sale or purchase of pre-registered SIM cards is illegal. Section 11 of the law stipulates penalties including imprisonment for six months to six years, and fines ranging from Php 100,000 to Php 300,000.
“We commend the PNP-CIDG for their successful operation, which represents a significant victory in the fight against fraud. This operation underscores the effectiveness of the SIM Registration Act as a tool to combat scammers,” said Atty. Froilan Castelo, Globe’s General Counsel.
Globe also reminds customers to register only their own SIM cards under their names, with the exception of SIMs used by minor children or other underaged SIM users under their care. Customers are urged to avoid accepting offers to register SIM cards on behalf of others for cash.
Additionally, Globe advises customers to be cautious when purchasing SIM cards, especially if they come in tampered packaging, as it could indicate that the SIM cards have been previously used. Customers are encouraged to ensure that SIM cards are sealed and purchased from legitimate retailers.
Globe remains committed to promoting responsible SIM card usage and supporting efforts to protect its customers from fraud in the digital age. The company stands ready to continue collaborating with authorities to combat illegal activities and strengthen online safety.
