Philippine Coast Guard commends Sto. Tomas Mayor for P1.5-M facility, 5,000-Sqm lot

In a significant move to boost maritime emergency response and disaster management, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), led by Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan, has recognized Sto. Tomas Mayor John Sambo for his generous donation of a state-of-the-art 2-story facility worth P1.5 million. Located near the community landing fish port in Brgy. Poblacion, Sto. Tomas, Pampanga, this new facility will play a pivotal role in enhancing the PCG’s capabilities in responding to maritime emergencies, particularly during calamities.

During the official turnover ceremony of the PCG Sto. Tomas Station, Commodore Arnaldo M. Lim, Acting Commander for the Coast Guard District National Capital Region – Central Luzon, lauded Mayor Sambo’s proactive initiative, which will significantly benefit the community’s safety and disaster resilience.

The newly constructed facility, fully funded and donated by the local government, will serve as a hub for disaster response efforts, environmental protection, and maritime safety. In addition, Mayor Sambo’s contribution includes a 5,000-square meter vacant lot, which holds great potential for further development, such as housing additional PCG facilities or serving as a training ground for personnel.

PCG Commandant Admiral Gavan expressed his deep appreciation for the partnership, emphasizing the long-term impact it will have on the region. “The Philippine Coast Guard extends its sincerest gratitude to Mayor John Sambo and the people of Sto. Tomas for this invaluable contribution. This facility and the lot for potential future use will strengthen our ability to respond to emergencies, especially during natural disasters. This is a significant boost to our morale and our mandate to assist our fellow Filipinos in times of need,” Admiral Gavan said.

Mayor Sambo echoed the importance of the collaboration, noting the vulnerability of Sto. Tomas to flooding and other disasters. “Sto. Tomas is a flood-prone area, so it is crucial that we are prepared to assist our residents during times of calamities like floods and typhoons. This partnership with the PCG ensures that we have dedicated resources ready to respond when needed. With this facility, we are not only improving disaster preparedness but also fostering stronger ties between the local government and the PCG,” Mayor Sambo said.

The Mayor further highlighted the broader scope of the partnership, which includes the PCG’s role in enhancing environmental and ecological research, particularly in preserving the local aquaculture industry. Mayor Sambo also expressed hope that the visible presence of the PCG in Sto. Tomas would inspire young people to pursue careers in maritime service, strengthening the country’s maritime workforce.

As the Philippine Coast Guard expands its presence in Central Luzon, the partnership between Sto. Tomas and the PCG is a testament to the powerful impact of local and national collaboration in building stronger, more resilient communities.
