CEBU JOURNALISTS STRENGTHEN AI AND MEDIA SKILLS

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to transform newsrooms, journalists and communications educators in Cebu came together for a full-day workshop aimed at enhancing their AI literacy while reinforcing ethical and responsible journalism practices.

“This workshop seeks to address pressing challenges community journalists face daily—ranging from digital safety and mental wellness to the impact of AI on the newsroom,” said Atty. Maria Jane Paredes of STET–Women in Cebu Media.

The training was organized by STET–Women in Cebu Media in partnership with International Media Support (IMS), the Asian Center for Journalism (ACFJ) at the Ateneo de Manila University, PLDT Inc. (PLDT), and Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart).

Journalist and media advisor Jaemark Tordecilla discussed how AI tools can support newsroom tasks such as summarizing information, generating story ideas, and transforming content, while stressing the importance of accuracy, fairness, and responsible use.

Innopub Media Co-founder Max Limpag also shared practical strategies on digital security, highlighting the role of online safety in protecting journalists and strengthening public trust. Meanwhile, Bidlisiw Foundation Inc. Executive Director Pamela Uy emphasized mindfulness and self-care as vital tools for sustaining mental well-being in the demanding field of journalism.

“We’re committed to empowering our stakeholders, including the media. This workshop is one way of helping journalists build resilience in the digital age,” said Roby Alampay, First Vice President and head of Public Engagement and Corporate Communications Group at PLDT and Smart.

The initiative reflects PLDT and Smart’s support for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions).
