Sanyo Denki Donates Hydroponic Systems to SBMA

Sanyo Denki Philippines Inc., a Japanese electronics manufacturer, has donated two Hydroponic System units to the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) to promote healthy eating and local food production.

The units, installed at Building 255, are currently cultivating Black Rose Lettuce, which will be distributed to SBMA employees upon harvest. Sanyo Denki Philippines Inc. Director Yosuke Takeuchi explained that the systems grow chemical-free vegetables in a controlled environment while serving as a test bed in partnership with the government agency.

The donation was formally presented to SBMA Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose L. Aliño on January 22, 2026, by Takeuchi and Sanyo Denki Philippines Inc. President and CEO Hirokazu Takeuchi. Aliño expressed gratitude, noting that the hydroponic units could also be implemented in future dormitory and residential areas for Freeport employees to boost food security.

“With SBMA buildings running on solar power, electricity for these units will not be an issue. We hope these systems succeed so that other companies in Subic Freeport may adopt them for their employees,” Aliño said.

The Hydroponic System uses San Ace fans, a Sanyo Denki product, and can grow leaf radish, parsley, Mizuna, coriander, romaine, green, and iceberg lettuce. The Deep Flow Technique units weigh 61 kilograms (without water), run on 220-volt electricity consuming 0.3 kWh, accommodate 90 plants, and hold 60 liters of water. Lettuce can be harvested in as little as 20 days.

This donation reflects the company’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and employee well-being while promoting urban farming in the Subic Freeport.
