Danger-level heat persists across PH

Most parts of the country may continue to experience dangerous heat index levels on Wednesday, May 20, with temperatures reaching as high as 45°C, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

PAGASA said the heat index, or the “feels like” temperature that combines air temperature and humidity, may reach the danger category of 42°C to 51°C in at least 40 areas nationwide.

Among the areas forecast to record the highest heat index was San Ildefonso at 45°C.

Under the danger category, PAGASA warned that heat cramps and heat exhaustion are likely, while heat stroke may become probable with prolonged exposure or physical activity.

Metro Manila, meanwhile, remained under the “extreme caution” category, with forecast heat index levels ranging from 39°C to 41°C.

Other areas expected to experience danger-level heat index include Laoag City, Dagupan City, Tuguegarao City, Iba, Clark International Airport, Tarlac City, Puerto Princesa City, Legazpi City, Iloilo City, Tacloban City, Davao City, Surigao City, and Butuan City.

PAGASA weather specialist Chenel Dominguez reminded the public to remain cautious despite the increasing occurrence of afternoon and evening rains.

Dominguez said heat index levels remain high, particularly from noon until late afternoon, even as rains become more frequent in several parts of the country.
