Customs authorities at the Port of Subic intercepted a shipment worth ₱6.669 million after discovering that frozen chicken and fish tofu had been misdeclared as cooked tofu.
The 40-foot container shipment from Hong Kong was flagged for inspection based on intelligence information indicating that it could contain frozen or processed food products and agricultural commodities.
Upon examination, customs personnel found 1,380 cartons of frozen chicken breast and 174 cartons of frozen fish tofu, contrary to the shipment’s declared contents.
The shipment was recommended for the issuance of a Warrant of Seizure and Detention (WSD) for alleged violations of food safety, agricultural importation, and customs laws, including Republic Act No. 9711 or the Food and Drug Administration Act of 2009; Republic Act No. 10611 or the Food Safety Act of 2013; Department of Agriculture regulations; and Section 1113(f) of Republic Act No. 10863 or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
Port of Subic District Collector Atty. Geniefelle P. Lagmay said the interception underscored the port’s responsibility to ensure that imported shipments comply with customs regulations and to protect legitimate trade and public interest.
“The Port of Subic remains steadfast in its duty to protect our borders and ensure that all shipments entering the country comply with customs laws and regulations,” Lagmay said.
Customs Commissioner Ariel F. Nepomuceno, meanwhile, said the seizure demonstrated the Bureau’s continuing enforcement efforts despite recent organizational reforms and personnel movements.
He directed customs personnel to remain focused on preventing smuggling and protecting legitimate trade, while warning individuals involved in facilitating or protecting illegal shipments that they would face accountability under the law.
The interception forms part of the Bureau of Customs’ continuing campaign against smuggling and customs violations, as it strengthens efforts to promote food safety, secure the country’s borders, and uphold its Integrity, Accountability, and Modernization (IAM) Movement.
