Filipina tennis star Alex Eala advanced to the second round of the US Open after defeating American qualifier Mary Stoiana, 6-1, 6-2, Tuesday night at Louis Armstrong Stadium in New York.

The 17th-seeded Eala delivered a dominant performance, converting four of eight break-point opportunities while holding off Stoiana’s attempts to find her rhythm in the second set.

Eala needed just one hour and 18 minutes to secure the victory and continue her campaign at the Grand Slam tournament.

“It was very difficult. Every exchange had its own challenges, especially at the start of the second set,” Eala said after the match, acknowledging Stoiana’s strong run through the qualifiers and recent performances.

The victory sends Eala into the US Open second round, keeping alive her bid for another breakthrough on the Grand Slam stage.
