Alex Eala marches into US Open Third Round

Filipino tennis star Alexandra Eala continued her winning run at the US Open, defeating Ukraine’s Oleksandra Oliynykova, 6-1, 6-4, on Friday to advance to the tournament’s third round.

The No. 17 seed needed just 64 minutes to secure the victory at Louis Armstrong Stadium, displaying the patience and consistency that proved decisive against her former Strasbourg conqueror.

“I was pleased with my patience and my consistency of focus. That was the key to winning the match,” Eala said in an on-court interview.

Eala, who also swept American qualifier Mary Stoiana in the opening round, will next face either No. 14 seed Iva Jovic of the United States or unseeded British player Francesca Jones.

The breakthrough adds another milestone to Eala’s standout season after she captured the WTA 500 Mubadala DC Open in August for her second singles title.

She is also the reigning Southeast Asian Games champion.
