Ayta family in Palauig preserves tradition through broom-making

In the upland areas of Palauig, a traditional craft continues to sustain an indigenous Ayta family amid life’s daily challenges.

For 62-year-old Maria Pulagay, handmade broom-making remains a steady source of livelihood for her family. Using a mountain-grown plant locally known as “erok,” she carefully crafts walis tingting that are sold at the Palauig Public Market.

The process involves gathering raw materials from the mountains, cleaning and drying them, then skillfully assembling each broom by hand. To augment her income, Maria also sells plants sourced from upland areas.

Her story reflects the resilience and resourcefulness of the Ayta community, where traditional craftsmanship continues to provide livelihood while helping preserve their culture and way of life.
