Cybersecurity firm urges stronger digital hygiene against online threats

Global cybersecurity and digital privacy firm Kaspersky has backed the Department of Information and Communications Technology’s advisory urging the public to exercise caution when using public Wi-Fi networks to avoid cyber threats.

Kaspersky said unsecured public Wi-Fi connections can expose users’ passwords, banking information, and personal messages to cybercriminals monitoring the network, echoing the DICT’s warning against accessing banking apps or sensitive accounts while connected to public wireless networks.

The company also advised users to verify the legitimacy of Wi-Fi networks, disable automatic Wi-Fi connections, log out of online accounts after use, enable device firewalls, use strong passwords, avoid public USB charging stations, and turn off Bluetooth and near field communication (NFC) when not needed.

Both the DICT and Kaspersky emphasized the importance of practicing good digital hygiene to reduce the risk of cyberattacks and protect personal information while using public internet connections.
