House impeaches VP Sara Duterte

The House of Representatives on Monday voted to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte, with 257 lawmakers affirming the motion, 25 opposing, and nine abstaining.

The vote approved the House Committee on Justice report transmitting the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate for trial, far exceeding the constitutional requirement of one-third of all members needed to initiate impeachment proceedings.

During the plenary session, Committee on Justice Chairperson Rep. Gerville Luistro of Batangas presented the articles and stressed that the decision was not merely about numbers but about accountability, constitutional duty, and the pursuit of truth.

The impeachment complaint contains four major allegations, including the alleged misuse of ₱612.5 million in confidential funds under the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education, purported unexplained wealth and SALN discrepancies, alleged bribery involving DepEd officials, and grave threats linked to Duterte’s public statements against top government officials.

Lawmakers were provided copies of Committee Report No. 261 along with supporting evidence submitted to both the complainants and the defense.

With the House approval, the Articles of Impeachment will be transmitted to the Senate, which is expected to convene as an impeachment court. A conviction would require a two-thirds vote of all senators.
