The University Athletic Association of the Philippines has barred all members of the coaching staff of Ateneo de Manila University who were present during the team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora where men’s basketball players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili drowned on June 8.
In a statement, the UAAP said the sanction takes effect immediately, prohibiting the coaches from participating in any league-related activities while investigations are ongoing.
The league described the move as a preemptive measure aimed at preserving the integrity of the inquiry and ensuring transparency and due process as the circumstances surrounding the incident are examined.
Among those reportedly present during the activity were former head coach Tab Baldwin and assistant coaches Dean Castaño, Jon Jacinto, and Sandro Soriano. Baldwin and team manager Epok Quimpo have since resigned.
The UAAP has given Ateneo until July 15 to complete its fact-finding investigation, after which the league will determine any further sanctions. The association stressed that accountability will be based on the results of a thorough and impartial probe and that those found responsible will face appropriate penalties under league rules.
A possible sanction under consideration is a one-season suspension across all sports, which could affect Ateneo’s participation in several UAAP competitions.
