The Department of Health-Central Luzon Center for Health Development (DOH-CLCHD) and Jose B. Lingad Memorial General Hospital (JBLMGH) have launched the Hansen’s Clinic, a specialized facility aimed at providing dermatological and leprosy-related services in the region.
Maria Eloisa Vidar, Chief of the DOH-CLCHD Local Health Support Division, said this initiative is a vital step not only in enhancing healthcare services but also in addressing the stigma surrounding leprosy.
“This clinic serves as a platform to educate the community, correct misconceptions, and promote understanding and compassion for those affected,” Vidar emphasized.
Vidar also highlighted the increasing number of cases in certain provinces of Central Luzon, particularly among children. She pointed out that the presence of leprosy in the pediatric population could indicate ongoing transmission within communities, making early intervention crucial to prevent further spread.
“The opening of the Hansen’s Clinic will improve the referral system between hospitals and local health units, ensuring patients receive regular check-ups, continuous treatment, and access to nearby healthcare facilities,” she explained. She reiterated that the DOH-CLCHD remains committed to supporting JBLMGH in enhancing leprosy service delivery.
JBLMGH Chief of Medical and Professional Staff Alfonso Danac also underscored the significance of specialized healthcare facilities in addressing Hansen’s Disease and affirmed the hospital’s commitment to providing treatment, rehabilitation, and continuous support for those affected by leprosy.
Marigold Sibal, Head of JBLMGH’s Public Health Unit, reiterated the healthcare sector’s collective responsibility to ensure no patient is left behind. She called for continued efforts in research, patient education, and community outreach to further reduce the burden of leprosy in the region.
The Hansen’s Clinic is located on the 4th floor of the Outpatient Department-Public Health Unit Building at JBLMGH and is open every last Thursday of the month from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. (PIA Region 3-Pampanga)
