DOST, BPSU seal deal for Doppler Radar Station in Bataan

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), through the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Bataan Peninsula State University (BPSU) on September 8 in Quezon City for the establishment of a Doppler radar station in Abucay, Bataan.

Funded by the Office of the President through the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the facility will provide real-time weather data to improve forecast accuracy and strengthen disaster preparedness in communities.

DOST-PAGASA Administrator Nathaniel Servando said the partnership underscored the importance of collaboration between government and academe in disaster risk reduction and climate resilience. He thanked OCD for its support in protecting the lives and welfare of Filipinos during natural calamities.

Deputy Administrator for Research and Development Marcelino Villafuerte II likewise recognized BPSU’s contribution, citing their earlier partnership in establishing a synoptic station in Abucay in 2021.

For her part, BPSU President Ruby Santos-Matibag described the MOA as both a formal partnership and a celebration of shared commitment to scientific progress and public safety. She emphasized that the radar station reflects the university’s dedication to research and innovation that respond to community needs, especially in disaster risk reduction.

Once operational, the Doppler radar station is expected to become a vital tool in enhancing the country’s disaster preparedness by providing more accurate forecasts and timely warnings for communities nationwide.
