Gov. Aglipay orders probe into collapse of Piggatan Bridge in Alcala

Governor Edgar “Manong Egay” Aglipay immediately visited the site of the collapsed portion of Piggatan Bridge in Alcala, Cagayan, to personally assess the situation and coordinate emergency measures. The governor met with Alcala Mayor Tin Antonio, DPWH Assistant Regional Director Rona Ubinia, District Engineer Oscar Gumiran, and PCOL Mardito Anguluan of the Cagayan PNP to discuss rerouting plans for motorists affected by the bridge’s closure.

According to Mayor Antonio, the 45-year-old bridge is the oldest in the municipality and has a load limit of 18 tons. Initial reports suggest that the collapse may have been caused by four consecutive trailer trucks carrying agricultural goods, which allegedly exceeded the bridge’s weight capacity.

Governor Aglipay has ordered a thorough investigation by the Philippine National Police and DPWH Region 2 to determine liability. He emphasized that operators and drivers found to have violated weight restrictions will face appropriate penalties.

Meanwhile, the DPWH 1st Engineering District assured the public that repair work will be prioritized in close coordination with the Local Government of Alcala and the Provincial Government of Cagayan to ensure the bridge’s immediate rehabilitation and the safety of travelers.
