Mayor Lazatin Orders Disinfection in Public and Private Schools to Prevent HFMD Spread

On January 23, 2025, Mayor Carmelo “Pogi” Lazatin Jr. issued an order directing the disinfection of all public and private elementary schools in Angeles City. This initiative is part of the city’s efforts to prevent the spread of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD).

Mayor Lazatin emphasized the city government’s commitment to protecting the health and well-being of the community, particularly its youth.

The directive follows recommendations from City Health Officer Dr. Verona Guevarra after a logistics meeting led by Chief Adviser IC Calaguas. The meeting included Executive Assistant IV Reina Manuel, General Services Officer Evangeline Malonzo, Angeles City Tourism Auxiliary Head Mike Lising, and Dr. Guevarra.

“We are personally overseeing the logistical and operational aspects of the disinfection campaign to ensure all schools are thoroughly sanitized, as instructed by Mayor Lazatin,” Calaguas said.

The disinfection activities will begin on Saturday, February 1, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. A team composed of various city offices—including ACTA, ACBO, the Mayor’s Office, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office, and the Environmental Management System—will lead the operation.

This initiative is part of the city’s heightened response to suspected HFMD cases reported in local schools. Dr. Guevarra stated that Anolyte, an advanced disinfectant solution that is both safe and eco-friendly, will be used to ensure effective sanitation with minimal health risks to students.

Dr. Guevarra also encouraged parents to provide their children with personal alcohol for regular hand disinfection, especially after the sanitation drive.

In a statement released on January 22, Mayor Lazatin addressed the five suspected HFMD cases reported in the city, assuring the public that the situation is being closely monitored by the City Health Office.
